‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic

Thehe debut appearance the Spanish forward competed in English soil, an young representing the reserve team against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he found the net. The second time he played in England, against the Black Cats following that, he netted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, indeed, he did it once more. When he returned to Manchester to face United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he says, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” So Athletic did their duty: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker admits, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, the city, the early training is about to start; post-session, the brief trip to the airport and a further journey to the UK, this time to play Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the club, due in part to the requirements of being here. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.

In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a final at home by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river surrounded by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.

He considered it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in that summer, he suffered a ACL injury, dropped, a drop in category and a recall before he could earn his place, making his comeback to experience the peak of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the first team but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his debut and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A massive setback but I look back on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, aged 23, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and if one day a vacancy arises in your position, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states savor the moment. Particularly after the previous season which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with 16 in 2023-24, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
